Purgers (APM-NEAP)

Non-condensable gases in a refrigeration system are harmful and reduce the durability of the installation. The undesirable effects of non-condensable gases in a refrigeration system can be summarized in five points:

  1. Higher condensation temperature than expected
  2. Increased electrical power consumption
  3. Lower cooling capacity
  4. Longer compressor operating time than normal
  5. Increased compressor wear due to higher temperatures

Non-condensable gases in a refrigeration system include air, hydrogen, and nitrogen (formed by the decomposition of ammonia), as well as oily vapors caused by oil breakdown. Timely removal of these non-condensable gases from the refrigeration system lowers the condensing temperature and thereby reduces the electrical power consumption of the compressor motor. When the condensing pressure increases, energy consumption rises. An increase in condensing pressure of 1 bar results in approximately 4% higher energy consumption.

Manual venting is time-consuming and not always effective, as the location where non-condensable gases accumulate varies per installation. Hansen purgers provide an automatic and simple way to remove these gases from refrigeration systems operating with ammonia or other refrigerants. Hansen purgers are compact units that operate on the system refrigerant itself and do not require an additional compressor.

Auto-purger ® APM

The APM is a fully automatic, electronically controlled purger for non-condensable gases. The APM is pre-assembled, wired, insulated, and equipped with an automatic water-bubbling system. Installation is limited to connecting the piping to the vent points with 1/2" solenoid valves and check valves, the liquid supply and suction gas lines, the water supply line, and the drain to the sewer, as well as the 230V/50Hz power supply and wiring for the solenoid valves.

The APM supports up to four vent points. The piping system is fully welded, and the electrical connections are waterproof. Thanks to its large evaporator surface and natural refrigerant circulation, the evaporator is highly efficient, providing a higher purging capacity than most other purgers. Under normal venting conditions, the APM is suitable for larger installations.

Features:

  • No foreign refrigerant present in the purger

  • Automatic venting at multiple points

  • Automatic water refresh in the bubbling tube

  • Venting activity log

  • Optional PLC-controlled version available (AMPC)

  • CE-PED compliant

Auto-purger® NEAP

The NEAP is the basic model of the purgers. It operates fully mechanically and requires no power supply. Like other Hansen purgers, the NEAP runs on the system refrigerant. Unlike other non-electric purgers, the NEAP starts automatically. After the valves are opened, the purger fills with refrigerant, cools down, processes the air/gas mixture, and discharges the non-condensable gases.

Features:

  • No foreign refrigerant present in the purger

  • Automatic venting at a single point

  • No power supply required

  • CE-PED compliant
